SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Of the People
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to all! Refreshments will be served. This event celebrates the opening of the exhibition Of the People at the Stedman Gallery\, Rutgers University-Camden. \nThe 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence has inspired people across the country to reflect on the meaning of American democracy. The ideas that the government’s authority comes from the people who elected them and that its purpose is to serve the values and overall welfare of its people\, have been embedded in the American cultural psyche for some time. As too have repeated stories of democracy that teach the American public to trust in democratic process and the justice system. \nOf the People features a selection of works on paper by contemporary artists from across the United States who responded to the question: what does American Democracy mean to you? Through investigative research\, consulting various formal and informal repositories of knowledge\, and reflecting inwardly\, this group of artists particularly consider the meaning of American democracy in the present moment.

SUMMARY:AFROFUTURISM NOW: Speculation\, Imagination\, and World-Making
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Reynaldo Anderson\, Associate Professor of Africology and African American Studies at Temple University and Co-Founder of the Black Speculative Arts Movement\, joins Rutgers University–Camden for a timely and provocative exploration of Afrofuturism Now. \nAnchored in Afrofuturism 2.0 and Black speculative traditions\, Dr. Anderson will examine how African diasporic knowledge\, memory\, and creative practice actively shape the future rather than merely imagine it. In a moment defined by technological acceleration\, political uncertainty\, and ongoing struggles over Black life and belonging\, this lecture considers how speculation and imagination function as tools of liberation\, cultural critique\, and collective world-making. \nThis gathering invites students\, faculty\, staff\, and community members to think boldly about Black futurity\, creative freedom\, and the power of imagination to transform social realities in the present.

DESCRIPTION:A play by Lauren Gunderson \nIn Celebration of Women’s History Month! \nFour bold women—playwright Olympe de Gouges\, assassin Charlotte Corday\, ribbon-loving Marie Antoinette\, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle—team up in a wild\, feminist comedy set amid the Reign of Terror. As they plot\, spar\, and even murder Marat\, they battle the rising madness of 1793 Paris.
