SUMMARY:Reynier Llanes: Pursuit of Grace Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Stedman Gallery at Rutgers University–Camden offers a series of free public programs in conjunction with their current exhibition\, Reynier Llanes: Pursuit of Grace.  \nYear of the Arts at Rutgers University–Camden presents “Pursuit of Grace” an exhibit by renowned artist\, Reynier Llanes. Llanes’ paintings of imagined landscapes engage visual metaphors that explore personal\, cultural\, environmental\, and social inquiries. Through these subjects\, he asks philosophical questions about time and human experience. His work reminds us that discomfort is a necessary companion on the path to a hopeful and graceful future. \nThis exhibition features previous works from 2017 through 2024 as well as new works created for this exhibition at Rutgers University–Camden \nAbout the Artist\nBorn in Pinar del Rio\, Cuba in 1985. He attended the city’s school of art (Instructores de Arte) for four years and completed his studies in 2004. In 2012 Oxford America recognized him as one of the “New Superstars of Southern Art.” Llanes relocated with his family to Miami in 2015 in order to take advantage of the city’s international art market and vibrant cultural life and to be closer to his home country. His work is represented by prestigious institutions like Harmon Meek Gallery in Naples\, FL\, featured in public collections like the Denver Art Museum and presented at The Butler Institute of American Art\, the Polk Musuem of Art\, among many others. For the years to come\, Reynier would continue to work with institutions and communities in a series of projects focused on exploring the diverse sides of human nature and his exploration of art mediums and techniques. \n\n\n\nEvents\nCoffee + Culture\nThursday\, September 18\, 2025\n12:45–1:45 pm\, Stedman Gallery \nOpening Reception: Pursuit of Grace\nThursday\, September 25\, 2025\n5:00–8:00 pm\, Stedman Gallery \nArtist Workshop: Reynier Llanes\nSaturday\, September 27\, 2025\n10:30–12:30 pm\, Stedman Gallery \nFamily Days\nSunday\, September 21\, 2025\nSunday\, October 19\, 2025\nSunday\, November 16\, 2025\n12:00–3:00 pm\, Stedman Gallery \nExhibition Highlights Tours\nWednesday\, September 24\, 2025\nWednesday\, October 29\, 2025\nWednesday\, November 19\, 2025\n12:30–1:30 pm\, Stedman Gallery \nArtist Talk: Reynier Llanes\nThursday\, October 23\, 2025\n6:00–7:00 pm\, Stedman Gallery \nArt Workshop: Art Students League\nTuesday\, December 2\, 2025\n12:45–1:45 pm\, Stedman Gallery

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Of the People
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to all! Refreshments will be served. This event celebrates the opening of the exhibition Of the People at the Stedman Gallery\, Rutgers University-Camden. \nThe 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence has inspired people across the country to reflect on the meaning of American democracy. The ideas that the government’s authority comes from the people who elected them and that its purpose is to serve the values and overall welfare of its people\, have been embedded in the American cultural psyche for some time. As too have repeated stories of democracy that teach the American public to trust in democratic process and the justice system. \nOf the People features a selection of works on paper by contemporary artists from across the United States who responded to the question: what does American Democracy mean to you? Through investigative research\, consulting various formal and informal repositories of knowledge\, and reflecting inwardly\, this group of artists particularly consider the meaning of American democracy in the present moment.

SUMMARY:AFROFUTURISM NOW: Speculation\, Imagination\, and World-Making
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Reynaldo Anderson\, Associate Professor of Africology and African American Studies at Temple University and Co-Founder of the Black Speculative Arts Movement\, joins Rutgers University–Camden for a timely and provocative exploration of Afrofuturism Now. \nAnchored in Afrofuturism 2.0 and Black speculative traditions\, Dr. Anderson will examine how African diasporic knowledge\, memory\, and creative practice actively shape the future rather than merely imagine it. In a moment defined by technological acceleration\, political uncertainty\, and ongoing struggles over Black life and belonging\, this lecture considers how speculation and imagination function as tools of liberation\, cultural critique\, and collective world-making. \nThis gathering invites students\, faculty\, staff\, and community members to think boldly about Black futurity\, creative freedom\, and the power of imagination to transform social realities in the present.
